College Life Can Be Stressful
Being a college student can be very exciting, but it can also be very stressful. Handling classes, assignments, group projects, and trying to have a social life all at the same time can be overwhelming. Overcoming these challenges can be very difficult, but not impossible. Over time, I realized that taking care of my mental health is just as important as balancing my school work. Practicing self-care allows me to stay focused, feel less stressed, and feel more accomplished during my busy weeks.
Here are a few things that helped me balance school, work, and my mental health during the semester, which might help anyone who is struggling to balance them.
Staying Organized
One thing that really helped me take care of myself and plan out personal care throughout the semester was staying organized. When I started to feel overwhelmed with schoolwork, I realized I was trying to remember too many assignment deadlines and was leaving them all to the last minute because I kept forgetting them. I started to utilize Google Calendar, and it really helped me keep track of everything in one place.
I use Google Calendar for my class, assignments, job schedule, and personal time. When everything is in one place, it's easier for me to see what I need to do and plan my week better. Instead of feeling overwhelmed, I can take things one task at a time.
Taking a Break From Social Media
I know that as college students, we spend a lot of time looking at screens between online assignments, emails, and social media. This can make it feel like we are always on our phones or laptops. With this, taking a break from social media and screens in general can help me with my mental health and reduce my stress. Sometimes I go for a short walk, listen to music, or go to the gym. These breaks help me clear my mind and reset before returning to my assignments or other things I have planned.
According to the American Psychological Association, taking breaks can actually reduce stress and improve focus.
Spending Time With Friends and Family

Another important part of my self-care is spending time with people who support me. When school gets stressful, talking with friends or family helps me feel better and reminds me that I’m not alone. Even simple things like getting coffee with friends, studying together, or just hanging out can help reduce stress. Having a support system makes a big difference during busy or difficult weeks.
Why Self-Care Matters
Practicing self-care doesn’t mean avoiding responsibilities; it helps us manage stress and stay healthy while handling everything college life throws our way. For me, staying organized, taking breaks, spending time with friends, and doing things I enjoy all help maintain my mental health. College can definitely be challenging at times, but small habits like these can make a big difference. Learning how to take care of yourself now is also an important skill that will help you long after graduation, and maybe my tips can help you manage stress!
